Founder and chef Joké Bakare was born and raised in Nigeria, but we call ourselves a ‘modern west African restaurant’ because versions of our dishes can be found across that region.
We principally serve the food of three different tribes - Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa - the food of Joké’s heritage. Those cuisines are quite different: from the fiery heat of Yoruba food, to the rich spices that Igbos love, to the fire cooking for which Hausas are renowned.
You’ll find all those elements in our dishes, and perhaps ingredients you’ve never encountered before such as uziza pepper, uda, aidan fruit or daddawa. Our team is always on hand to explain and to help.
‘Chishuru’ is a Hausa phrase meaning literally ‘eat silently’ or more poetically ‘the silence that descends on the table when the food arrives’.
